| The 1978 Tabas earthquake took place on September 16 and was one of largest earthquakes to hit
Iran. The earthquake was measured between 7.5 and 7.9 on the Richter scale. It leveled a great part of the city of Tabas
and surrounding villages. An estimated 25,000 people were killed by the earthquake. It also destroyed several historical sites.
