Ampulla of Vater

The Ampulla of Vater is the part of the duodenum where the common bile duct empties into the second part of the duodenum, so named because it has the appearance of an ampulla. It is named after Abraham Vater (1684-1751), a German anatomist who first published a description of it in 1720.
