Argo

The Argo was the ship on which Jason and the Argonauts sailed from Iolcus to retrieve the Golden Fleece. The best source for the myth is Argonautica by Apollonius Rhodius.

The Argo was built by Argus, son of Phrixus. The Argo had the gifts of speech and prophecy because it was made of oak wood from the oracle at Dodona.

Jason and the Argonauts originate from the city of Argo, capital of Arcadia on the Greek peloponesse, thus nameing the ship after the city.

Other uses

These other uses of Argo are all derived from the name of the mythical ship:

  • The constellation Argo Navis represented the Argo; it has since been broken up into three constellations among the ship's sails (Vela), keel (Carina) and stern (Puppis).
  • Argo is also a web browser developed in 1994 by Bert Bos, which used its own style sheets.
  • Argo is a science project to deploy 3000 robotic oceanic probes to monitor Earth's oceans.
  • Argo was the name of an American sounding rocket used in 1958 at project Argus for measuring the radiation of the Atomic bombs. The Argo-rockets reached heights until 800 km.
  • In Star Blazers, the American adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato, the Argo was the name of the restored Yamato, both because of the similarity of intentions between the two ships (great quests across vast distances, carrying bands of heroes), and because of (probably) lingering American resentment towards the actual Yamato and what it stood for.
