Armagetron is an open source 3D multiplayer game in the style of the "lightcycles" game in the movie Tron. The overall look of the game is very much modeled after the film, but can be adapted in various ways.
The players have to steer their lightcycles across a maze, the size of which can be configured. Each lightcycle leaves an
impermeable wall behind -- once another player touches it, their lightcycle explodes. The movement of the lightcycle can be
viewed from various perspectives.
The goal of the game is to be the last surviving player, or in teamplay, a member of the last surviving team.
One unusual feature of the game is the method by which the lightcycles accelerate. The closer a player is to another's trail,
the faster their lightcycle will move. This allows for a wide range of maneuvers to capture or cut off other players.
The game can be configured so that after a specified time without an event (such as another player's death), one of two things
happens:
- the speed of all lightcycles is accelerated ("sudden death")
- a red circled area appears in the game, and the first player to enter it wins ("instant win zone").
Armagetron can be played against the computer or against human players. The client automatically fetches a list of servers
from the Internet, where other players can usually be found. Like most online games, Armagetron's playability can be severely
affected by high network latency (resulting in "lagging" of lightcycle reactions and other unusual effects). Any Internet-using
applications should be closed before running the game.
