Arsène Lupin is a fictional gentleman-thief character appearing in a series of novels by Maurice Leblanc. The novels state that he was
born in France in 1874, and he was still alive
when Leblanc died in 1941. He matches wits with Sherlock Holmes (disguised as Herlock Sholmes to avoid publishing problems) and concentrates his efforts on
robbing those who deserve it.
He is also referred to as the grandfather of Lupin III (Lupin the 3rd), a
Japanese animation character.
