Battlelords of the 23rd Century

Battlelords of the 23rd Century is a paper and pencil role-playing game designed by Lawrence R. Sims in the early nineties. The game's tagline is Roleplaying in a dangerous future. The Battlelords of the 23rd Century license was later sold by ODS to SSDC, Inc. in September of 1999.

Game features:

  • Multiple alien races (13 in the main rulebook alone. More info on the races strengths and weaknesses can be found on the official webpage)
  • d100 based system (skills, no classes, experience tied to skills)
  • matrix powers (psionics)
  • universe spans multiple galaxies
  • large selection of cybernetics, weapons and armor options

Criticisms of the game:

  • no space combat or construction systems
  • many typos
  • too many weapons and armor
  • complicated armor rules

Some of thse critisims are not valid in the current edition of the rules released in 2000. (Sixth edition) In specific the typos.

The game inspired a collectible card game named Battlelords released in 1995.
