Brendan Foster (born 12 January 1948 in Hebburn, Tyne and Wear, England) is a British former distance runner, and the founder of the Great North Run.

He was educated at St Joseph's Grammar School. Foster's athletic career saw him compete in the 1970 Commonwealth Championships in Edinburgh, the 1974 European Championships, the 1978 Commonwealth Championship in Edmonton, set two world records for the 3,000m competing in three Olympic Games and claiming Britain's only track and field medal (bronze in the 10,000 meters) at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. He was awarded the MBE in 1976.
