Synopsis
Homer J. Simpson "wins" the First Annual Montgomery Burns Award
for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence, a fictional $2000 prize awarded by Montgomery Burns. The name of the "award" was hastily concocted by Burns on the spot in an attempt
to convince Homer to sign a waiver freeing the nuclear plant of all liability for Homer's recently discovered sterility. Joe Frazier is the host of the award ceremony, which features extraordinary
extravagance (including a lengthy opening) but only the one $2000 prize awarded to Homer. Tragedy almost strikes the award
ceremony, however, when Homer, as he was announced the winner of the award, plunged from a balcony in the auditorium. He escapes
the incident without physical injury, and his pride barely intact. Homer then goes on to loan the money to his half-brother
Herb Powell as funding for his baby-translator, and the plot of the rest of
the episode follows along these lines.
The song played during the opening of the First Annual Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of
Excellence is referred to as "The Field of Excellence" on the album Go Simpsonic with the Simpsons and is track 14.
Quotes
- Homer: I'm not signing anything until I read it or somebody gives me the gist of it.
Mr. Burns: All right. Well, it just explains that you've ... won—yes, that's it—won, the first annual ... uh ...
Montgomery Burns ... uh ... award for ... uh ... outstanding achievement ... in, uh ... the field of ... uh ... excellence!
- Herb: Well I used to own a successful car company. My strategy was giving them Japanese names. You guys ever drive a Tempura
Hatchback?
Hobo one: Yeah!
Hobo two: You bet!
Hobo three: Yeah! I got hit by one of those.
