| Cable is a town located in Bayfield
County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 836. Cable
is best known as the starting point of the American
Birkebeiner cross-country skiing race.
Geography
According to the United States Census
Bureau, the town has a total area of 185.0 km˛ (71.4 mi˛). 179.3 km˛ (69.2 mi˛) of it is land and 5.6 km˛ (2.2 mi˛) of it is water. The
total area is 3.05% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 836 people, 381 households, and
230 families residing in the town. The population density is
4.7/km˛ (12.1/mi˛). There are 697 housing units at an average density of 3.9/km˛ (10.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is
99.16% White, 0.00% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.24% from two or more races. 0.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 381 households out of which 24.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present,
and 39.4% are non-families. 32.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65
years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.76.
