| Canada West was the western portion of the Province of
Canada. It consisted of the part of the modern-day Canadian
province of Ontario south of Lake Nipissing, the eastern shore of Georgian Bay, and
the northern shore of Lake Superior.
Formerly a colony called Upper Canada, it was merged with Lower Canada (present-day Quebec) to
create the unified Province of Canada in 1840 based on Lord Durham's Report on the Affairs of British North America (1839). The merger
paved the way for Canadian Confederation in 1867.
