Minho Campus Party

Minho Campus Party (also known as MCP) is a lan party, organized in Portugal on the Minho region, being the biggest and the first in this country.

A little of history

Party's has its origin in the north of Europe, where they are frequent, and where there tradition retraces 10 years or more in the past.
This event is an evident manifestation of the new ways of the youthful culture in this milenium: young joined for its interest for the computers, proceeding from any side of the world, sharing one same passion and exactly future one, developing a conviviality to salutar and at the same time fortifying its preparation for the challenges that if come across to them in century XXI.
Minho Campus Party is also and above of everything a network of people.

Locations by city, all editions are held in Portugal, in the Minho region.

Professor Altamiro Machado

The idea of bringing to Portugal, and in special for the Minho, a event of this type was of Professor Altamiro Machado, university professor and then director of the Department of Information Systems (DSI - Departamento de Sistemas e Informação) (http://www.dsi.uminho.pt) of the Minho University, that was one of the founders, after been one of the pioneers of education of computer science in the Seventies. Professor Altamiro Machado developed the ideia, looking for support and institucional support, and developing the first contacts with the team of the Spanish event. And was still for his initiative that a group of about forty students of the DSI participated in the Campus Party (http://www.campus-party.org) 2000 in Valencia, with the objective of later helping to implement the Portuguese version of the event. Unhappyly Professor Altamiro Machado died in ends of March 2001. Therefore the accomplishment of the Minho Campus Party a tribute to the university professor and man of vision. On the event of 2001 (http://www.minho-campus-party.org/mcp2k2/mcp2001.php), a session to honor the professor's memory  (http://www.minho-campus-party.org/mcp2k2/mcp2001.php?IDM=35) was organized.

Network

Cisco Systems has come to support the MCP since its first edition, now for the past 4 (four) years, mounting the network infrastructure and giving the necessary equipment (an investment of more than two million dollars).
PT Communications (http://www.ptcomunicacoes.pt) supports the connection.

MCP 2004

  • 3 (three) ATM, STM-1 (155 Mbits each), connected to the central of the Telepac on Porto.
  • 15.000 meters optical-fiber
  • 30.000 of network cabels

Areas

Participants, many times organize competitions between them selfs, when those don't exist, many of them become official by the organization.
