Movement of Society for Peace

Politics of Algeria

The Movement for the Society of Peace (French: Mouvement de la société pour la paix, Arabic: Harakat Moudjtamaa As-Silm حركة مجتمع السلم, formerly called Hamas حماس) is an Islamist party in Algeria, led until his 2003 death by Mahfoud Nahnah. Its current leader is Bouguerra Soltani.

It received 7% of the vote in the 2002 elections and has 38 members of parliament. It is currently (as of 2004) part of a ruling coalition with the FLN and RND.

It favors the Civil Harmony Act, an amnesty for guerrillas who lay down their arms, and is strongly opposed to proposed changes in the Algerian Family Code.
