Pit band

A pit band (mostly historically) is a musical band, typically consisting of five to fifteen members, that performs before curtain or during set changes in vaudeville and other entertainment acts.

Pit refers to the orchestra pit, the usually lowered area in front of a stage where an orchestra accompanies the performers.
